belt bag compendium

The belt bag series is a study in material history. These durable materials had previously reached the end of their useful life on a personal and industrial scale. The new objects, functioning as vessels of varying shapes, question the definition of waste while challenges the reductive notion of 'eco fashion'. Belts included come from individuals and industry, combining the highly sentimental with industrial detritus to form a new and cohesive textile. Retrieving these materials from the 'social afterlife of things' is the opportunity to, as Walter Benjamin states, experience history through the waste of our culture.

Each bag is a unique object and made from 90-95% pre-consumer or post consumer waste. Horizontal stripes indicate levels of achievement earned in that particular belt, a unique signpost on the journey of these materials transitioning from one life to the next.
